Healthy Eating
The obesity epidemic is an important health issue facing a lot of Canadians. Canadian youth are faced with more health issues than before. With new waves of technology including smartphones, students are spending more time than ever watching television, playing video games, texting and participating in more and more “Screen Time” activities (Shields, 2005). Consequently, students tend to eat unhealthily while living their sedentary lifestyle. It has be presented that “there has been a steady increase in screen time and unhealthy eating behaviours (lower fruit and vegetable intake, higher sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and higher fast food intake” (2009, CIHI). Thus many people continue to correlate sedentary lifestyle, screen-time and lack of physical activity as the variables influencing this epidemic. Students have physical education classes, but within those classes, barely meet the 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
This Unit will look at both the Healthy Physical Activity and the Healthy lifestyle changes.
