Assignment 2: Dinosaur Webquest
(Please make sure that you have completed and handed in the "Evaluating Websites Assignment 1 !!!)
Evaluation is an important aspect of educational learning and growth. Teachers continuously evaluate students on a consistent basis to know whether or not students are meeting the required outcomes of their subject levels. The first assignment allowed you to develop critical thinking skills by asking the appropriate questions when choosing a website as resource for an assignment. To build on these skills, you need to learn how to create a grading scale or a rubric to help guide you through the evaluation of websites. The next assignment will allow you to develop a rubric and use the rubric to evaluate a website.
The Purpose of a Rubric:
1. A rubric is a scoring guide or a set of expectations used to judge student performance.
2. It measures a stated objective, using a range to rate performance.
3. Characteristics are arranged in levels, indicating the degree to which a standard has been met.
4. Rubrics are especially useful for assessing complex and subjective subjects.
5. They provide working guides for both teachers and students and are usually handed out before the assignment so that students know what is expected.

After the disaster at Jurassic Park, Dr. Grant and Dr. Sattler have to find another way to fund their research in Montana. Ellie talked Grant into setting up a Web site, www.dinosaurs.com, which will educate the public about dinosaurs. They have hired you as a research assistant. Since Grant still hates computers, your job is to find the Web sites that Dinosaurs.com will link to. You discovered that there are thousands of sites about dinosaurs. Now you need to narrow it down. You are looking for the best sites about specific dinosaurs.
Step 1: Write notes on evaluating websites (Click on step 1 on the webquest site)
Step 2: a) You are going to create ONE rubric (Example Rubric: Example_rubric , blank_rubric)
b) And use this rubric to evaluate the assigned websites from step 2 on the webquest.
Step 3: Creating a Memo - Now that you have used your own, personally developed rubric to evaluate three assigned sites, you are ready for the final step of this WebQuest. Your task is to search the Internet using Google or Yahoo to find three "strong" dinosaur research sites on one of the eight dinosaurs from the WebQuest.
You are also required to complete
a) rubric evaluation (the one you designed) for each of the three sites you find: example_rubric , blank_rubric
b) a memo for each of the three sites you find: memoexample
Below is an example of how your completed memo for step#3 of the Jurassic Park project should look.
(NOTE: Your site summaries must be written in paragraphs, not point form notes)
Memo template: memotemplate
Memo Criteria:
• memo is organized "formally" according to example above with all necessary titles and subtitles
• site paragraphs are well thought out and contain at least 4 strong supporting reasons
• each paragraph clearly outlines why you think the web site is a "strong recommendation"
• writing is edited for spelling, punctuation, grammar, and flow.
